What exactly is Retinol?

Retinol is one of the most active ingredients in skincare. You can think of each application like a spin class for your skin… it will get your skin in shape, but it’s intense. Would you jump into doing a spin class every day? No. You would build up from once a week. Let’s explore the unparalleled benefits of using retinol and how to build your skin fitness through a ‘retinol acclimatisation period’, ensuring you get all of the benefits without feeling the ‘burn’.

What are retinoids?

The term ‘retinoid’ is used to describe all derivatives of Vitamin A. This includes (in order of strength): retinol palmitate, retinol, retinaldehyde (retinal) and prescription strength tretinoin

(Retin-A, Retin-A Micro, Renova).

It’s well documented in scientific literature that retinoids can help the appearance of lines, wrinkles and pore size. As well as improving skin tone, texture and firmness making it a diverse ingredient for all skin types.

Who is Retinol for?

Retinol can be used by anyone that wants to see clearer, brighter, more radiant skin. This includes all skin types/tones, ages and gender. Using retinol in later decades of life can help improve the appearance of ageing. Using retinol in the early decades of life can help stockpile collagen, ensuring a youthful appearance for years to come.

NOTE: Retinol is not advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding. You should always consult with a skincare professional before starting a retinol product.

Retinol Palmitate VS Retinol

All forms of vitamin A must be converted by the body into retinoic acid before cells can use it. There is a step by step process the body follows to get to retinoic acid:

retinyl palmitate > retinol > retinaldehyde > retinoic acid

The overall rate of conversion from one form of vitamin A to another is low. Therefore, a clinically validated percentage of retinol is needed to produce visible effects. As even larger amounts of retinyl palmitatewould be needed due to its mild effect in the skin.

How does retinol work?

Retinol is like an upside down exfoliator for your skin. Traditional exfoliators work by removing dead skin at the surface, to promote new cell growth underneath. Retinol supports the production of new skin underneath, helping remove dead skin from the surface.

Pro Tip: Combine your Retinol Resurfacing Serum with one of our exfoliators for double action!

Did you know…

All forms of vitamin A eventually break down and oxidise when exposed to air and light, turning a deeper yellow and then brownish. The AlumierMD retinol collection which includes serums, an eye cream, and a neck and decollete moisturiser are packaged in an opaque container that minimises exposure to light and air resulting in an active formula that delivers results!
